The International Seminar Memory, Diversity and Identities: Challenges for Intercultural Relations in the 21st Century was held on November 5th, 2019, at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), in the city of Covilh\u00e3. The auditorium of the UBI Central Library was the venue for conferences, thematic sessions and discussions promoted within the scope of the project Memories, cultures and identities: how the past weights on the present-day intercultural relations in Mozambique and Portugal?, which is funded by FCT \/ Aga Khan Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members of\nthe project work team presented investigations carried out over the past year\nand in progress and were attended by researchers, teachers, and students from\nthe University of Beira Interior and other institutions from Mozambique and\nBrazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opening conference was given by Professor Mois\u00e9s de Lemos Martins, from CECS of the University of Minho, with the mediation of Professor Alda Costa, Assistant Professor and Director of Culture at the Eduardo Mondlane University of Mozambique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sessions with presentation of the research began with the theme Memory and museum exhibitions with communications:<\/strong> <\/em>Entre mem\u00f3ria e celebra\u00e7\u00e3o: o estranho caso dos museus (in)desejados, <\/em>Lu\u00eds Cunha (CRIA, Universidade do Minho);O Museu Nacional de Etnologia (Portugal) e as representa\u00e7\u00f5es de Mo\u00e7ambique,<\/em> Jo\u00e3o Sarmento (CECS, Universidade do Minho); Arte africana, tradi\u00e7\u00e3o e contemporaneidade. Sequ\u00eancias, ruturas e (algumas) problematiza\u00e7\u00f5es,<\/em> Jos\u00e9 Carlos Ven\u00e2ncio (Universidade da Beira Interior); e Curadoria, narrativiza\u00e7\u00e3o e memorializa\u00e7\u00e3o em cole\u00e7\u00f5es e exposi\u00e7\u00f5es museol\u00f3gicas: algumas considera\u00e7\u00f5es para in\u00edcio de investiga\u00e7\u00e3o,<\/em> Lurdes Macedo (CECS, Universidade do Minho)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist and researcher Catarina Sim\u00e3o opened the afternoon activities with the conference The National Museum of Ethnology of Nampula in the wake of her history: notes on the life of her images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following, the session on Portuguese and Mozambican Cinemas <\/strong>brought to the table communications: <\/strong>Do cinema ambulante em Portugal ao Kuxa Kanema em Mo\u00e7ambique: um olhar diacr\u00f3nico sobre a hist\u00f3ria do cinema, <\/em>Isabel Macedo e Eliseu Mabasso <\/strong>(CECS, Universidade do Minho; Universidade Eduardo Mondlane) e Cineastas emergentes em Portugal e Mo\u00e7ambique,<\/em>Ana Cristina Pereira (CECS, Universidade do Minho). A apresenta\u00e7\u00e3o de \u00e2mbito metodol\u00f3gico: Uma base de dados para a leitura e discuss\u00e3o de universos f\u00edlmicos, a partir de uma sele\u00e7\u00e3o das cinematografias mo\u00e7ambicana e portuguesa,<\/em>Alice Balb\u00e9, Lu\u00eds Camanho e Isabel Macedo (CECS, Universidade do Minho); e de an\u00e1lise f\u00edlmica: As sombras do passado colonial e as pol\u00edticas de mem\u00f3ria em Mo\u00e7ambique: reflex\u00e3o a partir dos filmes O tempo dos leopardos e Uma mem\u00f3ria em tr\u00eas actos,<\/em>Edson Mugabe (Universidade Eduardo Mondlane).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last thematic panel addressed the challenges of research, representations, and culture <\/strong>with communications: Complexidade da Pol\u00edtica de Financiamento de Pesquisas Cient\u00edficas em Mo\u00e7ambique<\/em>, <\/strong>Celestino Joanguete (Universidade Eduardo Mondlane); O Curandeiro e o novo testamento na obra de Paulina Chiziane,<\/em>Martins Mapera (Universidade de Zambeze); O passado colonial como problema n\u00e3o encerrado na contemporaneidade. A descoloniza\u00e7\u00e3o mental como possibilidade intercultural. O caso do Museu Virtual da Lusofonia,<\/em> V\u00edtor de Sousa (CECS, Universidade do Minho); e A relev\u00e2ncia das fontes hist\u00f3ricas e autorais na media\u00e7\u00e3o da mem\u00f3ria. Um estudo explorat\u00f3rio com manuais escolares de hist\u00f3ria portugueses e mo\u00e7ambicanos,<\/em> Lu\u00eds Camanho e Alice Balb\u00e9 (CECS, Universidade do Minho).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The closing conference was held by an Associate Professor at the Department of Communication Sciences, Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho Rosa Cabecinhas who is the project’s co-PI. The conference entitled: Images and cleavages: a diachronic look at the visual representations of the liberation script in the Mozambican textbooks presented the first results of the ongoing research on the Mozambican and Portuguese history textbooks. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The International Seminar Memory, Diversity and Identities: Challenges for Intercultural Relations in the 21st Century was part of the program of the 5th International Congress on Cultures: What Culture (s) for the 21st Century? as a pre-Congress. After the conference, members of the research team also held a general meeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
