Manuel Pinto is a Professor in Communication Sciences, at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, where he lectures in the fields of Journalism Studies, Media History and Media Literacy. Being a former journalist and the Press Ombudsman for the daily Portuguese newspaper “Jornal de Notícias”, he is currently Coordinator of the Media and Journalism Line and a member oft he Board of the Communication and Society Research Centre (CSRC), a Research Unit placed at the University of Minho.

During the past years, Manuel Pinto has been conducting investigation, as well as collective research projects, in the area of Jornalism studies, Media Education and Communication Politics. Recently he was coordinator of a study, supported by the state media regulatory entity (“Entidade Reguladora para a Comunicação Social” – ERC), about “Media Education in Portugal: Experiences, Actors and Contexts” (2011). He laid the foundation of  the recent National Media Literacy Obsevatory, based at the CECS, which is a joint initiative of the UNESCO’s National Comission, the National Education Council, the regulatory body ERC, the Office for the Media and the Ministry of Education.

Manuel Pinto is a member of the Portuguese Association of Communication Sciences (SOPCOM) and Vice-President of the “Media Education Research Section” of the  International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR).
