Welcome to the International Seminar “Narratives and Social Memory”

The team of the research project “Identities Narratives and Social Memory” is proud to announce the upcoming international seminar “Narratives and social memory: theoretical and methodological approaches”, which will be held at the University of Minho, Braga, Portugal, from June 29th to 30th 2012.

The seminar aims to discuss the impact and consequences of different approaches, currently dominant theories, as well emerging ones in the field. The seminar will bring together scholars from a wide range of disciplines across the social sciences from different countries, presently working on projects regarding narratives, identities and social memory.

The invited speakers include James H. Liu (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand), Janos Laszlo (University of Pecs, Hungary), Dario Paez (University of the Basque Country, Spain), Olivier Klein (Free University of Brussels, Belgium), Mariah Wade (University of Texas at Austin, USA), Maria Manuel Baptista (University of Aveiro, Portugal), Silvia Rodríguez Maeso (University of Coimbra, Portugal), Luiz Motta (University of Brasilia, Brazil) and Bruno Souza Leal (Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil).

The seminar will dedicate special attention to the role of cultural industries in the (re)construction of ethnic, national, and postnational identities and to the way they influence both interpersonal and international relations in contemporary world.

By bringing together researchers working on these themes from a wide spectrum of disciplines and in the light of postcolonial perspectives, this international seminar intends to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and explore sustainable networking.

In addition to the conferences, there will be workshops about methodological approaches on the study of social representations and demonstrations of narrative analysis software. Besides the scientific program, it will be offered an engaging social program including a documentary exhibition and a theatre performance, among other things.

After the event it will be published an eBook with selected papers.

English will be the official language of the seminar. However, on Saturday (June 30th ), some of the workshops will be taught in Portuguese.
